We’re proud of our amazing team at ESP Law and wanted to share a behind-the-scenes look into each of our colleagues. So, each month, we’ll ‘introduce’ you to one of them so you can find out more about their role, what they love most about it, and why ESPHR is making such a difference in the world of employee relations…
Summarise what you do at ESP Law
I advise employers on all aspects of employment law, but specialise in immigration too – which means I get passed plenty of queries about ‘right to work’ issues while also helping employers to obtain sponsor licences in order to allow them to recruit from outside the UK. This is getting more confusing, and important, with Brexit on the horizon so I hope to add extra value for ESPHR customers.
Outline your background prior to joining the team
I trained in-house which was a fantastic experience and ignited my interest in all-things-employment – it is such a varied topic that you can never get bored. After moving into private practice, I continued working for employers and added immigration as a specialism. Over the past few years, I have broadened my immigration experience, and it was a natural move to join ESP Law and become part of a fantastically skilled team, while adding some of my own knowledge to the mix.
What Is your favourite part of the job?
Having busy days! The time goes quickly when you have a lot of different enquiries to deal with and, because each situation is different, there is always something new to learn.
What do you think ESPHR offers, that no other business in the industry does?
A really integrated service where the lawyers feel part of the in-house team and not simply a faceless service at the end of a phone.
Who is your ‘dream’ customer and why?
Timpson – the firm seems to really care about its employees and have rolled out so many initiatives over the lockdown period which really impressed me. It is always good to work with employers who have fresh ideas and put staff first.
Describe ESPHR in one word
Essential.
What is the one thing that you’d want your customers to know you for?
My enthusiasm.
What would you like to achieve over the next 12 months – at ESPHR and individually?
With ESPHR, I’m looking forward to seeing how the Employee Relations (ER) technology side – MyHRCases – develops, so we can continue to offer something new, and vital, to HR teams and employers. Personally, I’m thankful to be part of such a varied team that I will inevitably learn a lot from over the next 12 months.
You’re in an industry that never stops. What’s in store for ER over the next 12 months?
There are still huge hurdles to overcome due to the Coronavirus crisis and the ensuing damage to the economy. I predict that people trying to manage employment issues in their business will be at risk of burnout, due to the constantly shifting landscape. On the bright side, I think there will be individuals with good ideas who come out of this stronger – so it will be interesting to see how things develop.
Outside of work, what do you like doing?
I mostly focus on my family of two young children, older dog, and a hamster who all keep me very busy. We go swimming a lot and I try to sneak off to the hot tub for a few moments’ peace. I’m also a big F1 fan so many Sundays are reserved for the race. Finally, when I get chance, I love to crochet and have recently taken up playing the piano again after about 20 years.
