The lunchtime lockdown with... Russell Guest

As a firm which places Employee Relations (ER) at our heart, we are proud of the amazing team here at esphr. That is why our current employee Q&A seeks to share a little more about each one of our colleagues.

Up next, is Russell Guest, esphr's sales director – who is convinced he should have put his sales patter to good use by securing sponsorship for a career in Formula One. Until then…

What’s the one thing which marks esphr out as an employer of choice?

Without a doubt, it must be good leadership and a fantastic team culture.

What would you say if you were to explain what esphr does to an alien?

We help in-house ER and HR teams to manage their people issues better, while ensuring the customer stays within their annual budget for tackling such challenges.

If you could give anyone an internal award, who would it be and what would it be for?

Senior marketing executive Kerry Byrne – for coming up with a seemingly endless supply of quirky marketing ideas to help share our story!

What is your funniest memory of someone in the team?

When our managing director, Pete Byrne, stood up from the table – at a very posh restaurant in London to say goodbye to a colleague – and quickly realised he had tucked the tablecloth into his trousers! Cue four bottles of smashed wine, six glasses, and a lifetime of embarrassment now that it is in print!

What keeps the job interesting for you?

As a salesperson, I love speaking to businesses across a wide range of sectors and rising to the challenge of tailoring a service to meet their key needs – which hopefully then converts into a new customer.

If you hadn’t chosen the career you’re in, what other profession would you be in?

Given the opportunity (and cash reserves) I would have loved to be a Formula One driver – surely my sales skills would come in handy in securing sponsorship for my dream job! Failing that, I expect I would have been working as a personal trainer – because I love keeping fit.

Where do you see esphr in five years’ time?

Hopefully as the ‘mid-market employment law firm service model of choice’ for the UK!

A little-known fact about you?

I once appeared on Top Gear…in the audience sadly but only six feet away from Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz!

If we went into lockdown for another time, who would you like to be locked down with and why?

Micky Flanagan, I would laugh so much that lockdown would be a breeze!

Which five celebrities (dead or alive) would you invite to a dinner party?

Firstly, it would have to be Billy Connolly and Michael Caine for the laughs. Then I would probably choose James Hunt for the F1-related stories, and Chris Ryan for his SAS insight! Finally, Kate Beckinsale, has to make the cut – she would bring unrivalled glamour to the table.
